Tuberculosis outbreak ravages Angola's capital, Luanda
(MENAFN) Luanda, Angola, is grappling with a severe tuberculosis outbreak, with 28,701 cases recorded in 2024 alone, according to a news agency. The alarming figures also reveal that 1,040 deaths have occurred within the same period.
Fernando Varela, Luanda's provincial health director, attributed the high mortality rate to late-stage diagnoses, highlighting that many patients seek medical attention when already in critical condition. "Many patients arrive in critical condition with severe lung damage and breathing difficulties," Varela stated.
In response to the crisis, authorities are planning to expand tuberculosis treatment facilities in Luanda. Currently, the city has 50 such facilities, and officials aim to increase this number by at least 20 percent to better serve the densely populated region.
Varela emphasized the need for improved public awareness and education on tuberculosis, stating that expanding healthcare services will play a crucial role in early detection and treatment. The ongoing outbreak underscores the urgent need for increased resources and proactive measures to combat the spread of the disease in the Angolan capital.
